Gambar 1 (Drawing no. 1)
2022
61 x 91 cm
Charcoal, acrylic and marker ink on canvas

Gambar 1 depicts a figure with the likeness of Rangda — the queen of witches in Balinese mythology — extending a weapon towards the viewer in a direct confrontation, referencing the part of an act in the Barong Dance where Rangda influences the men in the performance to hurt themselves. The choice in the figure’s apparent nudeness mimics older works of non-Balinese artists of topless Balinese people combined with the artist’s own illustrative style. The presence of Rangda is meant to be subtle and ever-lingering.
