Portrait of Parent and Child
2022
150 x 200 cm
Acrylic and pen ink on canvas
Portrait of Parent and Child is an honest and raw depiction of the relationship between parents and their children, one that ultimately reflect back the viewer’s own experience and perception on the subject. Is the image one that expresses protection and solace, or is it desperation in clinging to each other that comes through? Is the vulnerability a sign of comfort or is it alarming? Are they crying about the world around them, or the state they are in? Which amongst the two even is the parent, and which is the child? Who is the dominant force?
The wingless bird is based on the national bird of the artist’s country of birth, Indonesia — the Javan hawk-eagle. In ways, the country and culture one was raised in leaves an immeasurable effect on the personhood much like that of a parent; inspiring complicated, sentimental feelings, and passing generational curse or blessing. And while acceptance or rejection is left up to the individuals, one cannot deny the cord connecting them at birth.
